ABOUT BRITTON TIMBERS
HISTORY
Britton is a name that has been synonymous with sawmilling and the timber industry
ever since Britton Bros Pty Ltd was established in the Blackwood rich swamplands of
North West Tasmania. In 1907, two brothers Mark and Elijah Britton came to Tasmania
in search of prime farm land. After realising the value of large stands of timber
they turned their trade to sawmilling, surviving the Great Depression, mills burning
down and bush fires. Nearly a century later Britton Timbers is the largest privately
owned hardwood sawmill in Tasmania, sustaining 100 full time employees. Today
Brittons is owned and managed by third and fourth generation family members.

ENVIRONMENT
Britton Timbers sources all its timber from sustainably managed temperate forests
of North West Tasmania. Sustainability is achieved through compliance with the
Forest Practices Code and Regional Forest Agreement.
It is envisaged this forest management will be certified under the Australian Forestry
Standard, which is being developed within the recognised international frameworks
of the Montreal process criteria and indicators, and the ISO 14000 series. The
sustainability of our forests will enable future generations to enjoy the magnificent
native timbers in perpetuity.
